A landmark of conceptual fashion, this top comes from A-POC, the groundbreaking line Issey Miyake developed with engineer Dai Fujiwara at the Miyake Design Studio in the late 1990s. The idea was radical: a single machine-knitted tube of cloth, programmed with garment outlines and cut by the wearer or maker with scissors, so that nothing is wasted. That zero-waste approach anticipated today's conversations around sustainable fashion by decades, and the line is held in museum collections including the Museum of Modern Art and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Here the philosophy shows in the raw, unhemmed seams that frame the shoulders and the sleeve, and in the dramatic funnel neck that can be worn tall and sculptural or folded and slouched. The matte, stretchy knit moves between second skin and architecture, echoing Miyake's lifelong dialogue between Japanese tradition and technological innovation, from the Pleats Please pleating to the engineered fabrics of the 1990s. Its muted gray, minimalist palette places it alongside the quiet, intellectual avant-garde of Comme des Garçons and Yohji Yamamoto, and the neck-to-shoulder volume speaks to the same sculptural language beloved by the Antwerp Six and later Martin Margiela. A true collector's piece for anyone drawn to wearable art, conceptual design, and the technical poetry of Issey Miyake.
